For months, The Allegheny Inn has been on my radar as a B&B I really wanted to check out. Nestled in Deutschtown on the North Shore, the historic Pittsburgh lodging option is close to several popular attractions and its perks are plenty. Curious about the historically chic hang? So was I.
Accommodations
The Allegheny Inn has four guest rooms/suites with plenty of space to move about. Mr. Locke and I had the pleasure of staying in The Darwin Room on the second floor. Our room had a gorgeous electric fireplace that could be turned on simply for ambiance or heat (or both!). We ended up sleeping most of the night with the flickering light on and it was so cozy. The Queen bed was super comfy, as were the pillows and extra quilts.
As for the bath, I adored the claw-foot tub. It reminded me of my mother’s house and a soak in it was exactly what I needed. No worries if you’re not the tub type: each guest room has a shower option as well. I’m going to go on a happy rant about the bathroom additions including a dark-colored washcloth to remove my make-up (the genius that thought of adding them to any and all hotels/B&Bs, and resorts needs commended!), plenty of towels, and a long shelf to put all of our toiletries on.
There was a flatscreen television in our room but we couldn’t get it to pull up any channels. I’m sure all I had to do was ask the Innkeeper or manager to help but, honestly, the free wifi was enough.
There’s also two additional King Rooms and a suite that includes the use of the entire third floor. Need more than a room or two? There’s an option to rent out the entire house if you’d like. Keep in mind that the B&B is for adults only and a security deposit may be requested.
Style
The Allegheny Inn is on the list of National Historic Sites so you can expect its historically accurate updates to shine – and they do. Ceiling medallions, tall molding, and beautiful, working fireplaces are just the tip of the hat. The main floor’s sitting area/Common Room is really a beauty. The black and white (with a pop of red) color scheme is both traditional and hip compliments of the seating and window treatment textures. My fave was the black velour couches with large, crystal buttons. Glancing around the room I noticed the same theme on the drapery tiebacks.
Artistic Temperament
The Common Room’s shining stars are the art pieces prominently displayed on its walls. A local artist, Michael Barnhouse, you can easily see the patriotism reflected in his pieces and the Inn has an art guide to give art titles and additional information. Bonus: if you fall in love with one of his pieces, they’re for sale!
A True B&B
The Inn is a true B&B in that complimentary breakfast is included in the price of its guest rooms. On the morning that we visited we had a mini version of the breakfast (there was a fun party the night before for Food by Lyndsey’s second birthday so it was a family affair!) and, just from that sampling alone we were stuffed. Cinnamon French toast, bacon, yogurt, coffee, cereal – you name it.

Perks of Staying at the Allegheny Inn
While staying in an historically accurate B&B is reason enough to book a room, there’s plenty of freebies including:
- Parking (onsite behind the inn)
- Wifi
- Breakfast
There’s also the benefit of having an amazing Innkeeper to show you around and answer questions. Robert was knowledgeable and super friendly. On a side note, the Inn is an adult-only lodging option and may be considered a perk for folks that want a child-free respite. Hey, we have a teen daughter that we love taking on trips but sometimes it’s nice to have an adult getaway, dig?
In a Nutshell
Honestly, we loved our stay at The Allegheny Inn and wouldn’t hesitate for a second to visit again. The property is close to many Pittsburgh attractions, has a beautiful ambiance, and the caretakers are so welcoming. The entire property is non-smoking (thank you!) and we had no allergy attacks or issues.
