The Atlantic City Boardwalk isn’t just a path beside the beach – it’s a vibrant pulse of activity, amusement, and delicious eats. Whether you’re seeking classic thrills, a touch of history, or a luxurious escape, it has something for everyone. Here’s our list of the top experiences to add to your list the next time you visit.
Since I was a little girl, I’ve dreamt of walking along the famous Atlantic City Boardwalk. A fan of nostalgia and history, it appealed to me in every way. Finally, this past month, my dream came true and I stepped foot on the iconic wooden planks along the Atlantic Ocean. The visit was more than I ever imagined; here’s a peek at my fun.
1. Stroll Along the Famed Atlantic City Boardwalk and Take in Its History
The Atlantic City Boardwalk, a beloved American icon, boasts a rich history as colorful and vibrant as the characters that stroll its path. But its origins are surprisingly practical, born from a desire to keep sand out of fancy hotel lobbies! Here’s a peek at its cool history:
Humble Beginnings (1870s): In 1870, a one-mile long, eight-foot wide wooden walkway was built to address a rather mundane problem: sand tracked in by beachgoers. This initial iteration was a seasonal fixture, dismantled after the summer crowds departed.
Popularity and Expansion (1880s-1910s): As Atlantic City’s popularity boomed, so did the Boardwalk. By the 1880s, a permanent structure replaced the seasonal walkway, and its length and width grew significantly. Devastating hurricanes in 1889 and 1944 forced major rebuilds, but the Boardwalk’s resilience mirrored the city’s. The iconic herringbone pattern and steel infrastructure we see today were implemented in 1916.
Rise of Entertainment (Early 1900s): By the early 20th century, the Boardwalk had transformed from a utilitarian path to a premier entertainment destination. Grand hotels with their opulent lobbies lined the walkway, while amusement piers like Steel Pier offered thrilling rides, games, and shows. Rolling chairs, a quintessential Boardwalk image, became a popular mode of transportation for those unable to walk the long stretches. Fun fact: the rolling chairs are still in use and are an affordable way to see the Boardwalk sights without wearing out your feet!
National Recognition and Casino Era (1970s-Present): Designated a National Historic Landmark in 1987, the Boardwalk continued to evolve. The legalization of casino gambling in the 1970s ushered in a new era, with towering casino resorts joining the landscape. While some lamented the shift, the casinos undoubtedly revitalized the city and brought renewed interest to the Boardwalk.
A Legacy of Fun: Today, the Atlantic City Boardwalk remains a captivating mix of old and new. Visitors can experience the timeless joy of classic arcades and carnival games, marvel at the architectural grandeur of historic buildings, or indulge in the modern luxury of casinos and fine dining.
2. Take a Plunge at Island Waterpark
Atlantic City’s iconic boardwalk isn’t just about salty breezes and flashing lights anymore. Thanks to Island Waterpark at Showboat, it now boasts the title of being the largest indoor beachfront waterpark in the world! Whether you’re seeking a thrilling family adventure or a relaxing escape, Island Waterpark offers a wave of fun for all ages.
Waterslide Whirlwinds: Island Waterpark has 11 water slides catering to all levels of daring. Take a plunge down the heart-pounding “Riptide Run” or race your friends on the high-speed “Twin Twisters.” For a more relaxed ride, float down the lazy river or enjoy the refreshing current of the “Castaway Creek.” I loved the lazy river and spent most of my time there.
Beyond the Slides: The waterpark offers more than just slides. Challenge yourself on the FlowRider, a thrilling surf simulator that lets you experience the power of catching a wave. If you want to escape from the slides for a bit, renting a cabana in the adult-only area is my idea of calm.
Adult Oasis: Take a break from the splashing at Treehouse Bar, a lounge area exclusively for adults. Here you can unwind with a refreshing drink and enjoy views of the waterpark action.
Year-Round Fun: The retractable glass roof ensures year-round fun at Island Waterpark. Beat the summer heat or escape the winter blues with a refreshing water adventure. While it wasn’t retracted during our visit, it’s cool to know that it can be.
Convenience for Your Stay: Located at Showboat Resort, Island Waterpark offers easy access for hotel guests. Lockers, changing rooms, and a variety of dining options in a boardwalk style are available within the waterpark for your convenience.
3. Play Classic Carnival Games
The Atlantic City Boardwalk isn’t just about glitzy casinos and towering hotels; it’s also a haven for classic carnival fun. The salty air and rhythmic ocean waves create the perfect backdrop to test your skills and win big (or at least walk away with a giant plush dolphin) at Steel Pier and adjacent.
- Skeeball: A boardwalk staple, skeeball offers a chance to unleash your inner champion. Roll those balls down the lane and aim for the high-scoring holes to rack up tickets and redeem them for prizes.
- Water Gun Races: Put your aim and coordination to the test in these interactive water gun games. Race against friends or family to knock down floating targets and soak the competition (without getting soaked yourself, hopefully!).
- High Striker: Channel your inner strongman (or woman) with the high striker. Swing the mallet with all your might and see how high you can send the metal puck up the pole. Ring the bell at the top and you might just win a giant teddy bear.
- Ring Toss: This game of precision involves tossing rings onto various sized pegs. It’s a simple concept, but the challenge lies in controlling the throw and ensuring those rings land perfectly.
- Balloon Darts: Test your sharpshooting skills with balloon darts. Unlike the frustrating, often dull darts you might encounter elsewhere, Atlantic City boardwalk pros likely use darts that can actually pop those balloons, rewarding your accuracy with a satisfying burst and a potential prize.
- Milk Bottle Knockdown: A boardwalk classic, this game requires strategically tossing softballs at a pyramid of milk bottles. Carefully aim for the bottom center bottle to topple the entire structure and claim your victory.
- Basketball Games: Think you’ve got a jump shot like Steph Curry? Put your skills to the test on miniaturized basketball courts. Sink hoops within a time limit and walk away with a boardwalk trophy.
- Plinko: This game of pure chance involves dropping a puck down a pegboard filled with obstacles. Watch as it bounces and zigzags its way down, hoping it lands in a high-scoring zone and brings you closer to a prize.
- Claw Machines: The allure of the giant claw machine is undeniable. Strategically maneuver the claw and try to snag that perfectly positioned stuffed animal or the latest tech gadget. Patience and a little bit of luck might just win you the boardwalk bragging rights.
4. Grab a Bite to Eat
From classic boardwalk fare to unique flavors, there’s something to satisfy every craving. Here’s a peek at some of the most popular restaurants to grab a bite while strolling the vibrant Atlantic City Boardwalk:
- Classic Boardwalk Eats: No boardwalk experience is complete without indulging in iconic boardwalk food. Grab a hot dog or a funnel cake from a brightly colored stand, or savor some fresh-squeezed lemonade to quench your thirst.
- Casual with a View: For a relaxed beachfront atmosphere, check out LandShark Bar & Grill. This lively spot offers classic American fare like burgers, seafood platters, and refreshing cocktails, all with stunning ocean views.
- Margaritaville Magic: Escape to paradise at Margaritaville. This vibrant restaurant, inspired by Jimmy Buffett’s music, serves up delicious island-inspired dishes like jerk chicken, fish tacos, and juicy burgers. Plus, don’t forget to try their signature margaritas!
- Beyond the Boardwalk Classics: Venturing a block or two off the boardwalk can lead to hidden gems. Tony Luke’s, a Philadelphia favorite, offers mouthwatering cheesesteaks and Italian hoagies. For a taste of New Jersey, check out Tony Baloney’s for its creative and delicious sandwiches.
Tips for Boardwalk Bites:
- Consider your budget: Boardwalk prices can vary depending on the type of restaurant. Factor that in when making your choice.
- Look for deals: Many boardwalk restaurants offer special promotions, especially during the off-season.
- Don’t be afraid to explore: Venture beyond the big chains and discover some of the smaller, local eateries for a unique taste of Atlantic City.
- Enjoy the atmosphere: Soak in the sights and sounds of the boardwalk while you savor your meal.

8. Explore the History and Gorgeous Ocean Views at Absecon Lighthouse
The Absecon Lighthouse, towering over the boardwalk since 1857, offers stunning views from the top after a climb up its 228 steps. Learn about its rich history and the importance of lighthouses in maritime navigation. Towering 171 feet, the Absecon Lighthouse is the tallest in all of New Jersey and the third-tallest brick lighthouse in the United States. Construction began in 1854, and its first light shone in 1857, guiding countless ships safely past the treacherous Absecon Inlet.
A Climb Through Time:
The highlight of any visit to the Absecon Lighthouse is the climb to the top. Ascend the 228 steps (not for the faint of heart!) and be rewarded with panoramic vistas of the Atlantic Ocean, the bustling Atlantic City skyline, and the serene barrier islands. Both my 22-year-old daughter and I made it climb in only a few minutes (we’re very ambitious), but you can feel free to take it at your own pace.
History at Your Fingertips:
At the ground level, explore the museum housed within the lighthouse complex. Immerse yourself in the fascinating history of the lighthouse and its keepers through exhibits and artifacts. Learn about the Fresnel Lens, a marvel of engineering that once illuminated the night for miles around.
Planning Your Visit:
The Absecon Lighthouse is open to the public (with a nominal admission fee) from Thursday to Monday, 11am-4pm, making it a perfect addition to your Atlantic City itinerary. Be sure to check their website for current hours and information on special events.
9. Relax on the Beach
The Atlantic City Boardwalk is a classic summer destination, but sometimes you want to relax on the beach and soak up the sun. While the entire Atlantic City beach is free and public, certain areas cater to different vibes. Here’s your guide to finding the perfect spot to unwind on your Atlantic City beach trip:
For the Relaxation Enthusiast:
- Tennessee Avenue Beach: Escape the crowds and find a quieter spot on Tennessee Avenue Beach. This section offers a more serene atmosphere, perfect for spreading out your towel and reading a book with the sound of the waves lulling you.
For the Social Butterfly:
- Ocean Resort Casino Beach (Formerly Revel Casino Beach): Ocean Resort offers a luxurious beach experience with upscale cabanas and chaise lounges available for rent (reservations recommended). This section also features beach bars and restaurants where you can grab a drink and socialize with friends while enjoying the ocean views.
For the Budget-Minded Beachgoer:
- Brigantine Beach: Just a short drive away from the Atlantic City action, Brigantine Beach offers a more low-key vibe. It’s a great option for those looking for a clean, free beach with plenty of space to relax without breaking the bank.
For the Nature Lover:
- Gardner’s Basin: Escape the traditional beach scene and head to Gardner’s Basin, a historic harbor with a small beach area. Here, you can enjoy watching sailboats and other vessels while soaking up the sun. You can even grab some fresh seafood at the nearby restaurants.
Bonus Tip:
- Lifeguarded Beaches: For safety reasons, especially with families, it’s always recommended to swim at beaches with lifeguards on duty. These beaches are typically marked with flags and have lifeguard stations present during peak hours (10:00 AM to 6:00 PM) in the summer months.
