Just in case you don’t know me, I’m not the kind of gal that doesn’t plan on going gray gracefully. Having written that, going to the hair salon something I really enjoy doing.
But, as a travel writer, more often than not I am on the road when it’s time to get my roots touched up. So, when I heard about Gray Away and its products I was very intrigued. I mean, does it really do what it claims? And more importantly, is it easy to use, especially when I’m on the road? Having test driven its products for a while, here’s the story.
Gray Away Spray: An Overview
In a nutshell, Gray Away is a temporary root concealer spray. I’ve been using it for in between hair color appointment visits. Not only does it extend the life of my hair color it has self-adjusting color technology. Translation: there are 9 shade levels that blend in seamlessly to your existing hair color.
Each 1.5 ounce spray contains 40 applications and is super fast drying. Additionally, it stays put until you wash it out with shampoo. Concerned about it bleeding when you’re at the gym or out on super hot days? Don’t be. It’s sweat resistant, too.
Gray Away Quick Stick: An Overview
The Gray Away Root Touch-Up Quick Stick works similar to the spray, but it offers ultra-targeted coverage for both my hairline and eyebrows. It also has a sponge tip applicator in case I need to blend in areas.
It won’t flake, is both transfer and rain resistant, and easily washes out when I shampoo my hair. And, while we’re talking convenient, its angled tip makes it super easy to use and apply.
Gray Away Spray: My Experience
Keeping with this honest review, I received a Gray Away Root Touch-Up Quick Stick in the mail, but went to the store to purchase the spray myself (read below for where to purchase). I chose both products in the Light Brown color because I wanted it to match my highlights and not my natural hair color (medium brown).
Tip: I have two Root Touch-Up Quick Sticks (one in Light Brown & one in Lightest Brown). I like to layer them to blend in with my highlights and root color.
In my opinion, choosing the color was the hardest thing about the whole process. So let’s talk application for a sec. The concept is super simple: shake for 2-3 seconds, point the pin-point applicator at the area you want to temporarily cover, and spray away.
What I didn’t notice with each application were any harsh color lines. Instead, what I did notice was almost a blurring affect to my non-gray hair and really good gray coverage.
What About Gray Away and Travel?
When it comes to travel, I have a dedicated bag for all of my toiletries, make-up, and hair products. These days, I don’t even bother unpacking it because I travel so frequently. So, I need products that are both travel sized and travel well.
Both the Gray Away Temporary Root Concealer Spray and the Gray Away Root Touch-Up Quick Stick have sturdy lids. They are are also small enough to tuck right into my travel bag and go.
As for packing them with other items, I put them both in a large zip-lock bag just to be safe. But if I could only take one of the two for when I travel, I would differently take the Root Touch-Up Quick Stick for convenience sake.
