Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party at Walt Disney World is definitely family-friendly, but that doesn’t mean that it’s only for kids to enjoy. There’s plenty of fun things to do for teenagers when thy attend, too. From costumes to snacks and attractions, here’s our guide to Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party with teens: 5 must-dos.
Disclosure: We were graciously hosted by the folks at Walt Disney World to give you the scoop on Mickey’s not-So-Scary Halloween Party! All opinions are my own! #NotSoScary
My daughter was around nine when she went to her first Mickey’s not-So-Scary Halloween Party (MNSSHP) and she enjoyed it plenty. But, I remember wondering if she would still love it when she got older.
The truth? She probably enjoys it more these days. There are so many super fun things to do when teens attend that, for me, it’s a no-brainer to continue to attend with my teen. Here are the must-dos when you do as well.
Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party with Teens: Costuming
On a regular day in Magic Kingdom, guests over the age of 14 aren’t allowed to dress up in a costume. We are allowed to Disneybound, but it’s a toned down version of channeling our favorite Disney characters.
BUT, during a MNSSHP, all guests may dress in costume, including teens and adults. Of course, Disney World has applied rules to Halloween Party costume guidelines, but there’s a wide range for possibilities.
Some teens decide to wear Halloween t-shirts and shorts; others like to go all out. The choice is totally theirs.
1. Hop on Rides and Attractions with Much Shorter Wait Times
Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Parties have attendance caps on them, so even the busiest of party nights offer shorter wait times for popular rides. Depending on your teen, and you family’s preference, he/she may want to hop on some rides while you are holding your family’s spot for the Boo to You! Halloween Parade.
My daughter is 17, so I feel confident with giving her some theme park freedom to walk around without parents by her side. Of course, you know your teen best, so you be the judge of appropriateness.
2. Check Out the Enhanced Party Overlays on Rides and Attractions
The past couple of Halloween Party seasons, Disney World has enhanced a few of the Magic Kingdom rides with fun overlays:
- Pirates of the Caribbean – Live pirates throughout the entrance queue and ride
- Mad Tea Party – Halloween-themed music and lights
- Space Mountain – Ride in the pitch black with creepy music
By my teen’s liking, Space Mountain was definitely the coolest in her eyes. We rode with her and music, combined with the lack of any light, was really cool.
3. Trick-or-Treat with All the Candy
During the Party, the trick-or-treat paths are really popular and there’s good reason: Disney definitely doesn’t splurge on passing out Halloween candy. This year, we hit only two during the party and, between the three of us, ended up with an entire bag of candy!
If your teen has a food allergy, don’t worry about them feeling left out: Disney World has made special provisions. When they enter, ask for a special trick-or-treat bag. At each treat stop, your teen will receive a token to turn in at the end of the night for allergy-friendly treats and goodies.
4. Meet Elusive Disney Characters and Villains
A huge draw to MNSSHP is the fact that there are plenty of elusive Disney characters available for meet and greets – and that includes the Disney Villains. Along with Moana, Tarzan, and the Seven Dwarfs, this year’s M&Gs included Jafar, Jack & Sally Skellington, Lotso’, and Cruella de Vil. Jack and Sally are always super popular, but Lotso’ from Toy Story is as well.
5. Channel Their Inner Kid
If you have a teen that likes to be cool, taking him/her to a MNSSHP gives the chance to channel their inner child. They can trick-or-treat, watch the new fireworks show, Disney’s Not-So-Scary Spooktacular (we’ve seen it twice this season – so good!), and catch the Boo to You! Halloween Parade. It’s these events that really make the Party a one-of-a-kind event in Magic Kingdom, so make sure to find a good viewing area early.
