Looking for a really good gaming headset to ramp up your XBOX or Nintendo Switch play? We tested the Turtle Beach RECON 70 gaming headset and based our review on sound quality, ease of use, functions, and appearance. Here’s a full review.
I’m an old-school gamer, so think Super Mario Bros. and Sonic the Hedgehog. My teen daughter, on the other hand, is all about the latest games. So, when I received our RECON 70 headset in the mail, I immediately handed it off to her to test drive. However, I did test it our myself, specifically when it comes to the gaming audio. Here’s the scoop.
RECON 70 Headset: Appearance
We received the white with green gaming headset. There are several additional color styles including black/red, black/green, and black/blue, so you do have plenty of choices, especially if you like matching your headset to your gaming console.
It offers over-ear speakers for full coverage and sound quality (more on that below). The headset also has padded ear cushions made from synthetic leather. Yes, my daughter loves the cushioning on her ears as well as the noise isolation and outside noise reduction.
Add the fact that it’s very lightweight and we’ve got ourselves a good-looking piece that won’t hurt your head or weigh it down when you’re gaming for hours at a time.
The connector is 3.5mm, so it works well with both XBox, PS4, and Nintendo Switch.
If you have a pc or mobile device with 3.5mm connector capability, you can use the headset for them as well. Personally, the connector easily switches from one device to the next.
RECON 70 Headset: Microphone
Another benefit to the RECON 70 Headset is the fact that its microphone flips up when you don’t need to use it. It’s super easy to flip and instantly mutes when you do. It also offers high sensitivity, so when you need to issue a command or speak casually, there’s no issue with pickup.
RECON 70 Headset: Sound Quality
Okay, here’s where the headset really shines. Turtle Beach has done an excellent job with its audio capabilities. First to note are the 40mm speakers. With excellent surround sound quality (I tested it out on both games and music), you can hear every subtle sound.
Also noteworthy, the transition from one speaker to the other is really, really good. The deep, booming noises were right there along with the high, crisp sounds.
If you like numbers, its speakers work well in ranges from 12Hz to 120kHz.
I’m able to use it with my MacBook Pro for conference calls and Skyping, too. I know, you’re here for the gaming aspects, but it’s definitely good to know if you’re looking for a headset that you can mute easily.
Not an issue but worth mentioning: the speakers fit really well around my ears, so it truly did cancel out the outside noise, so well, in fact, that it was hard to hear my family talking to me. Of course, when you’re gaming, you want that complete, immersive experience, so it’s not a bad thing.
Final Thoughts
All in all, the RECON 70 gaming headset by Turtle Beach is well worth the money. If you’re just starting our with gaming, it’s an awesome beginner headset. Advanced gamer? It will do everything you need it to do with very little effort. After all, you want to focus on the game and not issues with your headset, right?
Lastly, Turtle Beach Recon 50 is the #1 selling wired gaming headset on the market. If you’re looking for updated quality, lightweight feel, and affordability, the Recon 70 is a VERY good choice.
Sure, there are more expensive gaming headsets out there, but paying top dollar doesn’t mean you’ll get the best experience. I my humble opinion, I’ll take affordability with quality any day.
