Nestled along the Cumberland River, Clarksville, Tennessee, offers a unique blend of history, natural beauty, and Southern charm. This vibrant city, often overlooked by tourists, boasts a wealth of attractions and activities that cater to a variety of interests. Here are the best things to do in Clarksville, TN, to put on your must-see list on your next visit.
Things to Do in Clarksville, Tennessee
Clarksville is located in northern Tennessee, approximately 45 minutes northwest of Nashville, which is the nearest airport if you’re flying in. The city is easily accessible by car or bus as well. I drove from the Pittsburgh, PA, area and it was highway driving for the most part.
Dunbar Cave State Park
This underground wonderland is a must-visit for both cave and nature enthusiasts. Explore the extensive cave system with guided tours, marvel at the stunning formations, and discover the fascinating history of the area. What I enjoyed best was visiting the Native cave drawings. There’s a fee for tours at Dunbar Cave and it’s best to secure tickets in advance.
Please note: Photos and videos are prohibited once you enter the cave. Not only is it to keep the preservation of the cave environment safe, but it’s also for cultural sensitivity: The Eastern Band of Cherokee and other Indigenous cultures consider Dunbar Cave to be a sacred site. Photography is seen as a way of taking a piece of the sacred space, which is disrespectful to their cultural beliefs.
Cumberland Riverwalk
Enjoying a stroll or bike ride along the picturesque Cumberland river Riverwalk is ideal, especially on cooler weather mornings and evenings. The path offers stunning views, picnic areas, and access to McGregor Park, a popular spot for family gatherings and outdoor activities. It’s also a fun spot for photos. Don’t forget to check out the small museum to learn about the river and its history.
Fort Defiance Civil War Park
Fort Defiance was established in 1862 to protect the Cumberland River and the city of Clarksville from Confederate forces. Its strategic position made it a vital asset for the Union Army.
The area was the site of several skirmishes and battles during the Civil War, including the Battle of Clarksville and the Battle of Fort Defiance. These engagements helped to shape the course of the war in the region.
I enjoyed exploring the park’s reconstructed earthworks, which provide a tangible glimpse into the fort’s original appearance and how they were designed to protect the Union soldiers from enemy fire.
Additionally, the park features a museum that houses a collection of artifacts, documents, and exhibits related to the Civil War and the history of Fort Defiance. Here, you’re able to learn about the lives of the soldiers who fought there and the challenges they faced.
Old Glory Distilling Co.
Whether you’re a whiskey enthusiast, a curious visitor, or simply looking for a fun and educational experience, Old Glory Distilling Co. is a must-visit destination in Clarksville, Tennessee. The distillery offers guided tours (for a fee per person) that provide insights into the distilling process, from grain to glass.
Truth? I don’t drink a ton of whiskey or bourbon, but it was a hoot to try a few of its bestsellers. Going through the process gave me real insight into flavor profiles, what to look for, and the difference in proofs.
Customs House Museum & Cultural Center
If there was only one piece of architectural perfection to see in Clarksville, it’s the Customs House Museum & Cultural Center. This beautiful Victorian-era building, once a bustling customs house, now houses a fascinating collection of artifacts and hands-on exhibits that appeal to visitors of all ages.
A popular attraction for both children and adults, the model train exhibit features intricate layouts and realistic scenery. Personally, it was my favorite area of the museum as you could visit countless times and still not see all of the teeny details. I loved the “See Rock City” barn – I actually was able to help repaint one last year.
Additionally, the museum offers a variety of art galleries showcasing works by local, regional, and national artists. You can also explore the rich history of Clarksville and the surrounding region through interactive exhibits and artifacts and learn about the area’s Native American heritage, its role in the Civil War, and its development as a thriving community.
Downtown Clarksville
It’s a charming downtown district filled with boutique shops, art galleries, and trendy restaurants. You can mosey along the quiet streets, visit mom-and-pop shops, and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere. If you’re looking for a great spot for a photo, look for the fountain and sit beside it.
