Shaken, Not Stirred: 5 Reasons Why a Mixology Class Is Worth It, Even If You’re Sober

The word “mixology” might conjure images of glamorous bars and expertly crafted cocktails. But the art of mixing drinks goes far beyond just creating boozy beverages. A mixology class can be a surprisingly enriching experience, even for those who abstain from alcohol. Here are five reasons you should consider one, even if you’re not a fan of liquor.

Why a Mixology Class is Worth It - non-alcholic drink

While the focus of a mixology class might be on creating delicious drinks, the skills and knowledge you gain can be applied to many other areas of your life. It’s a chance to explore your creativity, refine your palate, and connect with others who share a passion for good food and drink. So, whether you’re a seasoned home cook or simply looking for a fun and engaging evening, consider signing up for a mixology class. You might be surprised at what you learn.

During a recent visit to Tennessee, and the Liquor Lab Nashville, I personally delved into a mixology class with a few writers. While I do enjoy the occasional drink, I asked for a non-alchoholic spin on the class and found it highly enjoyable. Here’s what I took away from it.

1. A Deep Dive into Flavor

At its core, mixology is about understanding flavor profiles. You’ll learn about the nuances of different spirits, liqueurs, and mixers. For example, how does the sweetness of honey syrup interact with the bitterness of Campari? What botanicals give gin its unique aroma? These are the questions that drive a mixology class. This knowledge isn’t just useful for cocktails; it translates directly to cooking. You’ll develop a refined palate, allowing you to better appreciate the flavors in your food and even become a more creative home cook.

2. A Masterclass in Creativity

Mixology is a form of culinary art. It’s about balancing flavors, textures, and aromas to create something unique and delicious. In a class, you’ll learn about classic cocktails and experiment with variations. You’ll discover how to muddle herbs, juice fruits, and create syrups and infusions. This hands-on experience fosters creativity and problem-solving skills that can be applied to other areas of your life.

3. A Social and Educational Experience

Most mixology classes are interactive and social. You’ll meet new people, share your creations, and learn from experienced instructors. It’s a fun and engaging way to spend an evening, whether you’re looking to make new friends or simply enjoy a stimulating conversation. Many classes also cover the history of cocktails, the cultural significance of different drinks, and the ethical considerations of the beverage industry.

4. Impress Your Guests (with Non-Alcoholic Options)

Even if you don’t drink, you can still impress your guests with your newfound knowledge. You can create stunning mocktails that rival the most sophisticated cocktails. Think vibrant drinks with fresh fruit juices, homemade syrups, and aromatic herbs. You can also use your mixology skills to create delicious non-alcoholic punches and infusions for parties and gatherings.

5. Develop Valuable Life Skills

A mixology class can teach you valuable life skills beyond the realm of drinks. You’ll learn about precision, attention to detail, and the importance of following instructions. These skills are transferable to various aspects of life, from cooking and baking to gardening and even home improvement projects.

What You Need to Know Before You Start Mixing

Find the Right Class: Look for classes that cater to your interests. Some focus on classic cocktails, while others explore modern techniques or specialize in specific spirits. Consider your budget and schedule when choosing a class.

Dress Comfortably: Wear clothes that you don’t mind getting a little messy. You’ll be working with liquids and potentially some sticky ingredients.

Come with an Open Mind: Be prepared to experiment and try new things. Don’t be afraid to ask questions and share your ideas.

Bring a Pen and Notebook: Take notes on the techniques, recipes, and tips shared by the instructor. You’ll want to refer to them later when creating your own cocktails.

Most Importantly: Have Fun! A mixology class should be an enjoyable experience. Relax, embrace the creativity, and savor the process.
